When Red Bull Athlete and Sri Lankan Women’s Cricket Captain Chamari Athapaththu wanted to encourage more Sri Lankan girls to take up the sport professionally, we went straight to the root of the problem.

In Sri Lanka, when a girl reaches puberty, or becomes a ’Big Girl’ in local vernacular, she is subject to a set of barriers enforced by society and family alike. Barriers that lead to many young girls giving up on sport altogether. By showcasing the story of Chamari, herself a ‘Big Girl’ in the world of sport, we began the conversation about a previously taboo topic in Sri Lanka.
